Abstract
Este artículo intenta configurar una de las ideas emblemáticas de la visión realista de la política: la noción de equilibrio de poder. Para cumplir con tal objetivo su autor comienza explicitando los supuestos en los que está enraizada la idea en cuestión. Enseguida identifica qué funciones cumple el equilibrio de poder, qué requisitos son indispensables para su buen funcionamiento y de qué manera incita a llevar a cabo políticas de alianzas. El articulista concluye afirmando que el equilibrio de poder tiene simultáneamente dos objetivos cardinales: evitar que se constituya un centro de poder incontrarrestable (imperio mundial) y preservar la paz, entendida esta última como un armisticio tolerable.
