Abstract
En este artículo nos hemos centrado en estudiar el sistema civil de carrera existente en España desde el franquismo a la democracia. Para ello, en un primer momento hemos definido qué se entiende por servicio de carrera y hemos descrito las principales formas de aplicación que han tenido en algunos países desarrollados de larga tradición en esa forma de administración del personal burocrático. Para después, en un segundo momento, nos hemos propuesto explicar cuál ha sido la evolución que ha sufrido este modelo de personal en la administración pública española, como una forma de poder entender sus ventajas y desventajas, además de comprender cómo se ha llegado al que actualmente está implantado.
