An Approach to the Chilean-Mapuche Conflict: A Nomenclature on Intractable Conflicts

Abstract
At present there is no clear consensus on the use of a nomenclature to refer to the type of conflict with the Mapuche people in southern Chile. The most commonly used concepts are rural violence and terrorism. It is argued that the use of these concepts has generated a hermeneutical confusion. This has led to an emphasis on thinking that the central issue of the conflict is public security and not the historical indigenous demands. It is proposed that the category of Intractable Conflicts can help overcome this confusion and provide a better understanding of the conflict.
