Mexico at a Crossroads: Notes on Political Change Following the June 2024 Election

Abstract
This paper considers the Mexican election of June 2, 2024. It is evaluated in the light of broader socio-political processes. Although it is an election that is embedded in the narrative “the second floor of the Fourth Transformation,” it is centered on the concern of knowing what kind of political regime is being established. The answer articulated in this text is that the foundations are being laid for the construction of a civic-military autocratic regime of a personalist party, but its weakness will be the lack of institutionalization. In order to achieve this goal, the election is embedded in a reflection within the transition to democracy, which is ultimately described as a failure. Afterwards, the results are described and how they acquire meaning in the medium term by considering several dimensions that explain them. After this, the bases on which the new Mexican political regime will be based are outlined in order to finally assess the current situation.
